Hazards of Oil Dispersants

In the video, Susan Shaw had talked about how dispersants had killed more than the oil alone. There is double trouble. If we use dispersants, we will harm the coral and seagrass, but if we don't, the mangroves will be harmed. She had also talked about how the flame retardants are making regular marine animals "fireproof." This actually poisons the animals and can kill them. They are usually neurotoxic, and when she sampled her blood, she had seen that many flame retardant materials were in her body. There was also talk of the harm of the dispersants. They had killed many animals and are harming the sea life. They are also making the droplets so small that they can go into the smallest of openings. She stated that we are not regulating chemicals in the country and the workers are keeping "trade secrets" about this. Later, she had also talked about the complication of the marine food chain. People had thought it was very basic, but it turned out to be very complicated. There were also oil plumes coming from the bottom of the oceans. Susan later discussed more about the dispersants and how BP was using the most toxic form of Corexic, which is 9527, until they ran out. Now, they are on 9500, which is less toxic. However, all dispersants still have oil in them, and Corexic has more than most. The fertility rate is 90% with just oil, but with the dispersant as well, it is 0%. Many animals are also going extinct. In conclusion, oil and Corexic, more toxic than either one alone.

The article was very similar to the video. Bryan Walsh had talked about the same things that Susan Shaw did, such as the oil and dispersant harm and toxicity, and the plumes of oil in the water. At the end of the article, to sum it up, we need more studies. It is as simple as that. If we get more studies, we can prevent the life from harm, and we can clean up our mess.
